Bowel Cancer Screening

Closing the gaps in preventive healthcare

Ladywood Clinic Bowel Cancer Screening Program

Free screening · Personalised care · Early detection

At Ladywood Clinic, we're taking a more proactive and personalised approach to bowel cancer screening. We want to make it easier for our patients to stay up to date with this important preventive health check.

Bowel cancer can develop without obvious symptoms. Regular screening can help detect early signs of bowel cancer, when treatment is often most effective.

If you're eligible and due to start or repeat screening, you can request a free bowel screening kit through Ladywood Clinic.

Closing the gaps in bowel cancer screening

At Ladywood Clinic, we believe preventive healthcare should be personal, proactive and focused on every patient.

When our doctors reviewed bowel screening records, they were surprised to discover that some patients they believed were up to date had no recorded screening for several years.

It was an important reminder that screening can easily be overlooked, even when patients regularly attend their GP.

That's why we're actively reviewing screening records, identifying possible gaps and helping eligible patients access screening.

Fewer missed opportunities. Better follow-up. More personalised preventive healthcare.

Received a text message from Ladywood Clinic?

There's a reason we contacted you.

Our text messages are part of a targeted preventive health initiative, not simply a reminder sent to everyone eligible for bowel screening.

If you've received a message, it may be because you've recently become eligible to begin screening from age 45, or our review identified a possible gap in your screening history.

We want to make sure our patients understand why screening is important and have an easy way to participate.

Already completed your screening? Please let our team know so we can check the information and update your records where appropriate.

Why might Ladywood Clinic contact you?

Our bowel screening initiative focuses on two groups of patients, each with different screening needs.

Aged 45–49

You can now start screening earlier.

Bowel cancer screening was previously available from age 50. Since July 2024, eligible Australians can begin free bowel screening from age 45.

Ladywood Clinic is encouraging patients aged 45 to 49 who haven't started screening to take advantage of this earlier opportunity.

If you received a text message from us, it may be because you're now eligible to request your first screening kit.

Aged 50–74

Helping you get screening back on track.

Ladywood Clinic is reviewing bowel screening records to identify patients who may be:

Overdue for screening — their last recorded screening test may have been more than two years ago.

Not previously screened — we may have no record of a completed screening test.

Without a confirmed screening record — we may be unable to confirm their screening status from the records currently available to us.

If you received a text message, our review may have identified one of these possible gaps.

A missing screening record does not necessarily mean you have never completed a test. Please let Ladywood Clinic know if your screening has already been completed.

Why is bowel cancer screening important?

Bowel cancer is one of Australia's most common cancers. When detected early, more than 90% of cases can be successfully treated.

The screening test looks for tiny amounts of blood in your bowel motions that you may not be able to see.

Bowel cancer can develop without obvious symptoms, which is why routine screening is important even when you're feeling well.

For eligible people at average risk, bowel screening is recommended every two years from age 45 to 74.

When should you speak to your GP?

Routine bowel cancer screening is designed for people who do not have symptoms.

If you've noticed blood in your bowel motions, a persistent change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss or ongoing abdominal symptoms, please arrange an appointment with your GP.

Don't wait for a screening kit if you have symptoms.

Patients with a personal or significant family history of bowel cancer, or certain bowel conditions, may need a different screening or surveillance plan.

Preventive care that's personal

At Ladywood Clinic, we want to do more than simply remind patients about screening. We want to identify gaps in care, make screening more accessible and support better long-term health.

If you're eligible to begin screening or you're overdue, take the next step by completing our online request and consent form.

We'll telephone you when your screening kit is ready to collect from Ladywood Clinic.
